Residential Supervisor

REPORTING TO: Manager of Residential Services and Delegated Coordinator

STAFF SUPERVISED: Various full time equivalent, part time equivalent and casual residential aide staff

MISSION STATEMENT: The Parkland Community Living and Supports Society exists to improve the quality of life of the disabled through individual choice, dignity and rights.

  1. PURPOSE OF POSITION:
    Under the general direction of the Manager of Residential Services, the Residential Supervisor: manages the overall program delivery as it pertains to the specific facility and consumers, supervises and participates in the wellness and daily care of each consumer, supervises and participates in the development and implementation of personalized plans for each consumer, supervises and participates in each consumers individual development, supervises and develops a positive team atmosphere and manages and participates in the completion of logs and reports, and the daily household chores, routine housekeeping, yard up-keep, etc.
  2. TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    Under the general direction of the Manager of Residential Services, the incumbent in this position will be required to:
    1. Manage the overall program delivery as it pertains to the specific facility and consumers by:
      • subscribing to the goals, objectives, and values of Parkland Community
      • Living and Supports Society
      • participating in the recruitment process by requesting staff, interviewing, orientating, training
      • Providing ongoing team development by promoting positive team morale, conflict resolution, progressive discipline and
      • ngoing training for residential staff team
      • completing probationary and annual performance evaluations
      • providing direction to staff in all areas of the program delivery
      • ensuring proactive measures are taken and creative problem solving is initiated within the guidelines of day to day service of consumers
      • guiding the integration of the facility and the residents into the local community
      • overseeing and operating within the consumers personal budget and ensuring the proper handling of consumer funds
      • overseeing and operating within the identified staffing model
      • proactively working to identify issues or concerns
      • preparing shift schedules
      • participating in payroll process
      • authorization of financial expenditures as it relates to consumer expenses
      • conducting monthly staff meetings
      • providing advocacy and other assistance to the consumers
      • liasing with other professionals as it pertains to individual consumer needs
      • providing support in the area of crisis management to both consumers and residential staff
      • providing hands-on service delivery
      • adhering on a continuous basis to the Code of Ethics and the Oath of Confidentiality
    2. Supervise staff, as well as participate in, the promotion of wellness of each consumer by:
      • consulting with consumer and guardian in all areas of goal setting, and provide staff with direction, guidance, and training to assist consumer in meeting identified goals
      • providing support and understanding in consultation with consumer and guardian in the area of sexual expression
      • providing support and understanding in consultation with consumer and guardian in the area of spirituality
      • monitoring daily health conditions, recording outcomes and ensuring the consumers attendance at all medical, dental, specialist appointments and therapies including annual checkups
      • instructing the staff and the consumer in Abuse Protocol
      • ensuring that required logs and other documentation is completed in an appropriate and timely manner
      • ensuring that staff follow proper first aid and other medical protocols
      • ensuring the safety at all times of the consumers and staff
      • conducting and coordinating monthly fire drills and safety inspections
      • promoting positive team morale
      • maintaining availability in times of crisis to guide consumers and staff to positive resolutions
    3. Supervise and participate in the development and implementation of an overall personalized plan (Annual Service Plan) for each consumer by:
      • building and promoting positive relationships with each consumer, guardians, community, support staff and significant others
      • ensuring that required information is gathered and recorded on consumers history likes/dislikes, personal goals, etc.
      • documenting the Annual Service plan, in consultation with consumer, guardian, supervisor, residential staff and significant others
      • identifying available resources and services
      • identifying and assigning roles to all parties involved
      • assisting in identifying required resources
      • securing the required approvals to implement plan
      • monitoring and evaluating the implementation of plan
      • monitoring, documenting and reporting maladaptive behavioural issues
      • completing of developmental assessment
      • coordinating of assessments required from community resources
      • completing of monthly/quarterly reporting
      • annual updating of consumer personal budget, guardian consents and personal profile information
      • ensuring that all appropriate documentation is processed in a timely manner according to agency policy
    4. Supervise and participate in each consumers individual development and integration into the local society by:
      • identifying, developing and documenting each consumers needs in the area of personal development
      • implementing personal development plans for each consumer
      • ensuring that the plan includes all areas of personal development
      • planning, implementing and/or accompanying the consumer to social activities
      • promoting and supporting meaningful personal relationships with community members
      • assisting in securing the necessary resources and approvals to implement the plan
      • monitoring the plan and modifying it as required
      • evaluating the annual progress and developing a new or revised plan for the following period
      • completing 90 day assessment reports for new consumers
      • providing advocacy and promoting personal choice and expression
    5. Supervise and participate in the development and implementation of training programs (Individual Training Plan) for each consumer by:
      • identifying and documenting the consumers skills level
      • determining measurable and achievable skill development objectives
      • developing training plan(s) to reach these objectives
      • discussing proposed plan with program coordinator, multidisciplinary team, consumer, guardians, residential staff, and significant others
      • securing the necessary approvals to implement the training plans
      • directing and training the staff in delivery of training plans
      • monitoring, evaluating and modifying the plan as required to reach the objectives in consultation with consumer, guardians and significant others
      • utilizing opportunities for incidental learning and documenting same
      • providing staff training to ensure team proficiency in assisting consumers working towards their goals
    6. Manage and participate in the completion of logs and reports, and the daily household chores, routine housekeeping, yard up-keep, etc. by:
      • ensuring the required information is collected and recorded in a timely and professional manner
      • completing and submitting all required reports in compliance with guidelines as to timing, format and content
      • ensuring that cleaning, food preparation, laundry, and other household chores are completed in a timely and cost-effective manner
      • encouraging consumer to be responsible for facility appearance, both inside and outside
      • coordinating and identifying ongoing maintenance of the building, equipment and yard
      • ensuring regular inspection and replenishment of emergency supplies
      • ensuring regular inspection and replenishment first aid supplies
  3. JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
    To be effective in the performance of the position described above, an individual would require the following:

    KNOWLEDGE:
    • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the values of citizenship, choice, support, and equality of opportunity, as defined and adhered to by the Parkland Community Living and Support Society.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of the basic principles of supervision and proactive leadership
    • Demonstrated knowledge in behaviour modification as practised by Parkland CLASS
    • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the use of psychotropic medication as restrictive procedures as identified by AARC.
    • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of services for children and families as identified in the AASCF standards
    • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of CET standards as identified by AARC
    • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the role and responsibility of a Basic Skills Training Tutor
    • Detailed knowledge in the development of Individual Training Plans
    • Detailed knowledge in the development of Annual Service Plans
    • Detailed knowledge of the material in the Food Handling and Health Guidelines
    • Detailed knowledge of the material in the Canada Food Guide
    • Detailed knowledge of the material in the Universal Precautions Handout
    • Working knowledge of First Aid and CPR
    • Demonstrated knowledge of medication administration as required by individual consumer needs
    • Working knowledge of crisis prevention and intervention
    • General knowledge of the community amenities, social activities and opportunities
    • Detailed knowledge of Abuse Protocol
    • Demonstrated knowledge of WHMIS
    SKILLS:
    • Compatibility and demonstrated ability to work with consumers and residential staff of Parkland C.L.A.S.S.
    • Good verbal and written communication skills
    • Demonstrated financial and record keeping skills
    • Hygienic housekeeping and home safety skills
    • High degree of skill in demonstrating and promoting positive team building and interpersonal relationships
    • Skill in defusing tense and sometimes dangerous situations
    • Skill in providing a climate where consumers will be self motivated, empowered and positively encouraged
    • Patience and skill in implementing training programs
    EDUCATION:
    To adequately perform the duties of this position the incumbent will have completed a minimum of two years of post secondary studies in the field of human services.

    EXPERIENCE:
    The skills and knowledge listed above will likely have been gained through a minimum of three (3) years of experience in a related field of endeavour with at least one (1) of these years being in a supervisory position.

    Note: Some equivalency of experience and/or education may be accepted.

    • Excellent physical condition as confirmed by a medical examination
    • Clean criminal record or one that is acceptable to the Executive Director
    • Valid Class 5 Drivers Licence
    • Valid Class 4 Drivers License may be required
