Overnight Residential Aide (Sleep)

REPORTING TO: Residential Supervisor

STAFF SUPERVISED: None

MISSION STATEMENT: The Parkland Community Living and Supports Society exists to improve the quality of life of the disabled through individual choice, dignity and rights.

  1. PURPOSE OF POSITION:
    Under the general direction of the Residential Supervisor, the Overnight Residential Aide:provides an overnight availability for consumers who might have medical and/or behavioural needs; contributes to the implementation of consumer programs; and supervises consumer in their routine responsibilities; and when consumers are not sleeping, performs routine housekeeping duties.
  2. TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    Under the general supervision of the Residential Supervisor, the incumbent in this position will be required to:
    1. Provide an overnight availability for consumers who might have medical and/or behavioural needs by:
      • following the medical and behavioural protocols of Parkland C.L.A.S.S.
      • becoming very familiar with the medical and/or behavioural needs of each consumer in the home
      • mastering the operation of various medical equipment and procedures
      • identifying the consumers� medical and/or behavioural condition
      • responding to situations that arise during the night
      • recording the consumers� response to behavioural interventions
      • charting the provision of and response to the medical aid provided
      • responding to crisis situations
      • involving medical and/or behavioural specialists in a timely and effective manner
      • ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents of the home
      • briefing the oncoming staff on the over night incidents
    2. Contribute to the implementation of consumer programs by:
      • becoming aware of each consumers� program, goals and objectives
      • monitoring each consumers� progress
      • identifying areas where assistance, encouragement, supervision is required
      • accepting specific assignments from the residential supervisor
      • documenting progress
      • participating in the development and evaluation of Annual Service Plans and Individual training plans
    3. Supervise consumers in their routine responsibilities by:
      • ensuring that consumers perform the required pre-sleep and wake-up routines
      • encouraging consumers to maintain healthy sleep patterns
      • supervising and/or participating in the preparation of breakfast
      • encouraging and assisting consumers in preparing for their daily responsibilities
    4. Perform routine housekeeping duties by:
      • baking and preparing meals
      • doing the laundry, ironing, mending, etc.
      • performing general house-cleaning
  3. JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
    To be effective in the performance of the position described above, an individual would require the following:

    KNOWLEDGE:
    • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the values of citizenship, choice, support, and equality of opportunity, as defined and adhered to by the Parkland Community Living and Support Society
    • Detailed knowledge of the material in the Food Handling and Health Guidelines
    • Detailed knowledge of the material in the Canada Food Guide
    • Detailed knowledge of the material in the Universal Precautions Handout
    • Working knowledge of First Aid and CPR
    • Demonstrated knowledge of medication administration
    • Working knowledge of behaviour modification as practised by Parkland C.L.A.S.S.
    • Working knowledge of crisis prevention and intervention
    • General knowledge of the community amenities
    SKILLS:
    • Demonstrated ability to work with consumers of Parkland C.L.A.S.S.
    • Good verbal and written communication skills
    • Demonstrated financial and record keeping skills
    • Good housekeeping and home safety skills
    • High degree of skill in interpersonal relationships
    • Skill in defusing tense and sometimes dangerous situations
    • Skill in providing a climate where consumers will be motivated to take appropriate
    • action
    • Patience and skill in implementing training programs
    EDUCATION:
    To adequately perform the duties of this position the incumbent will have completed Grade 12 and have one additional year of course work that has some relevance to the goals and objectives of Parkland C.L.A.S.S.

    EXPERIENCE:
    The skills and knowledge listed above will likely have been gained through a minimum of one(1) year of experience in a related field of endeavour.

    Note: Some equivalency of experience and/or education may be accepted.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
    • Excellent physical condition as confirmed by a medical examination
    • Clean criminal record or one that is acceptable to the Executive Director
    • Valid Class 5 Driver�s Licence
    • Valid First Aid Certificate
    • Valid CPR Certificate
    • Valid PART Certificate
