Individual Lifestyles (I.L.S.) Aide

REPORTING TO: Adult Proprietorship and I.L.S. Program Coordinator

STAFF SUPERVISED: None

MISSION STATEMENT: The Parkland Community Living and Supports Society exists to improve the quality of life of the disabled through individual choice, dignity and rights.

  1. PURPOSE OF POSITION:
    Under the general supervision of the Program Coordinator, the Individual Lifestyles (I.L.S.) Aide: supports the consumer�s growth to independence and integration into local society; promotes the overall wellness of the consumer; participates in the development and implementation of personalized plans for the consumer; participates in the development and implementation of training programs for the consumer; participates in and/or supervises the production of numerous reports and records for the consumer.
  2. TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    Under the general direction of the Program Coordinator, the incumbent in this position will be required to:
    1. Support the consumer�s growth to independence and integration into local society by:
      • participating in the identification of the consumer�s needs in the area of personal growth and development
      • participating in the development and implementation of personal development plans for the consumer
      • facilitating and supporting the consumer in becoming more aware of, and involved in, the community
      • instructing and supervising the consumer�s development of safety and social skills in the home and in the community
      • instructing and monitoring money management and purchasing
      • being available to the consumer at all times for necessary guidance and support
      • monitoring the consumer�s progress in life style development according to the Annual Service Plan goals and needs
      • adhering on a continuous basis to the Code of Ethics and the Oath of Confidentiality
    2. Promote the overall wellness of the consumer in the areas of health, emotions, sexuality, and spirituality by:
      • encouraging, assisting, and when required, supervising in the area of personal hygiene
      • training, encouraging, and promoting nutritious meals and a balanced diet
      • promoting, encouraging and educating in the proper use of all medications
      • training and monitoring the consumer in the area of personal wellness
      • monitoring and accepting varying degrees of responsibility for the consumer�s attendance at medical, dental, and other appointments and therapies, as per the guardian�s request
      • training and then encouraging the safe operation of household appliances, equipment, etc.
      • promoting, recognizing, and responding appropriately to the consumer�s emotional health and well-being
      • assisting the consumer to understand and display their own sexuality in an appropriate and safe manner, as directed by the consumer and guardian
      • instructing the consumer in what is abuse and when and what action should be taken
      • supporting the consumer in appropriate quests for spirituality, as directed by the consumer and guardian
    3. Participate in the development and implementation of personalized plans (Annual Service Plan) for the consumer by:
      • promoting a positive relationship with the consumer and the consumer�s family and/or guardian
      • gathering information on past history, family dynamics, the consumer�s likes/dislikes, personal goals, etc.
      • orienting the consumer to the components of the plan
      • ensuring the consumer�s personal choices and goals are identified
      • clarifying/redefining responsibilities, roles, and expectations of the consumer, staff, and others
      • evaluating the effectiveness of the plan and suggesting modification as required
    4. Participate in the development and implementation of training programs (Individual Training Plan) for the consumer by:
      • participating in the assessment of the consumer�s current skill levels
      • participating in the development of skill level goals and a plan which stem from the consumer�s individual learning style and personality
      • facilitating the achievement of these goals
      • supervising/participating in delivery of the training
      • modelling the desired behaviours and skills
      • monitoring and recommending modification to the plan, as necessary, to promote the reaching of personal goals
    5. Participate in and/or supervise the production of numerous reports and records for the consumer by:
      • providing direction and training for the purpose of completing reports on the consumer�s individual service needs
      • monitoring the completion and accuracy of these reports
      • assisting in the completion of all reports as required
      • documenting and compiling the required information and maintaining accurate records
  3. JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
    To be effective in the performance of the position described above, an individual would require the following:

    KNOWLEDGE:
    • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the values of citizenship, choice, support, and equality of opportunity, as defined and adhered to by the Parkland Community Living and Support Society
    • Detailed knowledge of the material in the Food Handling and Health Guidelines.
    • Detailed knowledge of the material in the Canada Food Guide
    • Detailed knowledge of the material in the Universal Precautions Handout
    • Working knowledge of First Aid and CPR
    • Demonstrated knowledge of medication administration
    • Working knowledge of behaviour modification as practised by Parkland C.L.A.S.S.
    • Working knowledge of crisis prevention and intervention
    • General knowledge of the community amenities and social activities
    SKILLS:
    • Demonstrated ability to work with consumers of Parkland C.L.A.S.S.
    • Good verbal and written communication skills
    • Demonstrated financial and record keeping skills
    • Good housekeeping and home safety skills
    • High degree of skill in interpersonal relationships
    • Skill in defusing tense and sometimes dangerous situations
    • Skill in providing a climate where consumers will be motivated to take appropriate action
    • Patience and skill in implementing training programs
    EDUCATION:
    To adequately perform the duties of this position the incumbent will have completed Grade 12. Additional course work that has some relevance to the goals and objectives of Parkland C.L.A.S.S. is desirable.

    EXPERIENCE:
    The skills and knowledge listed above will likely have been gained through a minimum of one (1) year of experience in a related field of endeavour.

    Note: Some equivalency of experience and/or education may be accepted.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
    • Excellent physical condition as confirmed by a medical examination
    • Clean criminal record or one that is acceptable to the Executive Director
    • Valid Class 5 Driver�s Licence
    • Valid Standard First Aid and C.P.R. Certificate
    • Valid P.A.R.T. Certificate
    • Other training may be required
