Residential Aide

REPORTING TO: Residential Supervisor or Team Leader

STAFF SUPERVISED: None

MISSION STATEMENT: The Parkland Community Living and Supports Society exists to improve the quality of life of the disabled through individual choice, dignity and rights.

  1. PURPOSE OF POSITION:
    Under the general direction of the Residential Supervisor or Team Leader, the Residential Aide: promotes the overall wellness of each consumer, participates in the development and implementation of personalized plans for each consumer, supports each consumer�s individual development, participates and ensures that the consumers have a positive home environment in which to live, participates and ensures the daily completion of logs and reports, daily household chores, routine housekeeping, yard up-keep, etc.
  2. TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    Under the general direction of the Residential Supervisor or Team Leader, the incumbent in this position will be required to:
    1. Promote and support the overall wellness of each consumer in the areas of health, emotions, sexuality, and spirituality by:
      • encouraging, assisting or if required supervising personal hygiene
      • encouraging, and participating in nutritious meal preparation
      • encouraging, assisting and supervising the proper use of medications
      • monitoring and accepting responsibility for the consumer�s attendance at medical, dental, and specialist appointments and therapies
      • encouraging, supervising and assisting in the safe operation of household appliances, equipment, etc.
      • recognizing and responding to the consumer�s emotional needs in a positive compassionate manner
      • providing support and understanding in consultation with consumer and guardian in the area of sexual expression
      • recognizing the different types of abuse and following Abuse Protocol
      • providing support and understanding in consultation with consumer and guardian in the area of spirituality
        • ensuring the consumer has a positive home environment in which to live
        • advocating on behalf of the consumer
    2. In support of overall wellness, participate in the development and implementation of an overall personalized plan (Annual Service Plan) for each consumer by:
      • building and promoting positive relationships with consumers, guardians, community, support staff and significant others
      • assisting in gathering information on consumer history, likes/dislikes, personal goals,etc.
      • assisting in orientating the consumers to the components of the plan
      • assisting in evaluating the effectiveness of the plan and providing feedback to Residential Supervisor or Team Leader on same
      • completing assigned job duties/tasks related to consumer skill development
    3. Support each consumer�s individual development and integration into the local society by:
      • participating in the identification of each consumer�s likes/dislikes and needs in the area of personal development
      • facilitating and supporting the consumer in becoming more aware of the community
      • ensuring supervision and safety needs of the consumer are met while in their home or in the community
      • monitoring consumer expenditures while participating in community activities to prevent exploitation
      • ensuring, encouraging, supporting and fully participating with the consumer in their choice of community and social activities
    4. Develop and implement training plans (Individual Training Plan) for each consumer by:
      • assisting and participating in the assessing of the consumer�s skill levels
      • assisting and participating in the development and delivery of personal development goals
      • modelling the desired behaviours and skills
      • assisting in monitoring the plan and providing feedback to Residential Supervisor or Team Leader on same
    5. Participate in the daily completion of logs and reports, household chores, routine housekeeping, yard up-keep, etc. by:
      • documenting required information in a timely and professional manner
      • participating, assisting and supervising consumers as required in household cleaning, nutritious food preparation, laundry and other assigned related tasks in a timely and proficient manner
      • informing responsible staff when maintenance is required
      • encouraging and assisting consumer to be responsible for facility appearance, both inside and outside
    6. Team Participation:
      • respectful, responsible and professional written communications e.g. log book, communication book
      • regular attendance at all team meetings
      • maintaining positive relationships with co-workers
      • aintaining and promoting a positive living environment for consumers
      • working cooperatively with other team members by assisting in the completion of shift responsibilities
      • demonstrating flexibility in job responsibilities when it is in the best interest of the consumer
      • fully participating, with a positive attitude, in consumer activities by coming prepared to assist in whatever manner required in community, social and other activities
      • adhering on a continuous basis to the Code of Ethics and the Oath of Confidentiality
  3. JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
    To be effective in the performance of the position described above, an individual would require the following:

    KNOWLEDGE:
    • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the values of citizenship, choice, support, and equality of opportunity, as defined and adhered to by the Parkland Community Living and Support Society
    • Detailed knowledge of the material in the Food Handling and Health Guidelines
    • Detailed knowledge of the material in the Canada Food Guide
    • Detailed knowledge of the material in the Universal Precautions Handout
    • Working knowledge of First Aid and CPR
    • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of services for children and families as identified in the AASCF standards
    • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of CET standards as identified by AARC
    • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the use of psychotropic medication as restrictive procedures as identified by AARC
    • Demonstrated knowledge of medication administration as required by individual consumer needs
    • Working knowledge of behaviour modification as practised by Parkland C.L.A.S.S.
    • Working knowledge of crisis prevention and intervention
    • General knowledge of the community amenities, social activities and opportunities
    • Successful completion of Basic Skills Training
    • Detailed knowledge of Abuse Protocol
    • Working knowledge of WHMIS
    SKILLS:
    • Demonstrated ability to work with consumers of Parkland C.L.A.S.S.
    • Good verbal and written communication skills
    • Working knowledge and demonstrated skill in consumer record keeping
    • Good housekeeping and home safety skills
    • High degree of skill in demonstrating and promoting positive team building and interpersonal relationships
    • Skill in defusing tense and sometimes dangerous situations
    • Skill in providing a climate where consumers will be self motivated, empowered and positively encouraged
    • Patience and skill in implementing training programs
    EDUCATION:
    To adequately perform the duties of this position the incumbent will have completed Grade 12 and have one additional year of course work that has some relevance to the goals and objectives of Parkland C.L.A.S.S.

    EXPERIENCE:
    The skills and knowledge listed above will likely have been gained through a minimum of one (1) year of experience in a related field of endeavour.

    Note: Some equivalency of experience and/or education may be accepted.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
    • Excellent physical condition as confirmed by a medical examination
    • Clean criminal record or one that is acceptable to the Executive Director
    • Valid Class 5 Driver�s Licence
    • Valid Class 4 Driver�s License may be required
    • Valid First Aid Certificate
    • Valid CPR Certificate
    • Valid PART Certificate
    • CWIS (may be required)
    • Additional training may be required
